A GLIMPSE OF KEFALOS

Kefalos is a village at the Southern end of the island, about 18 kilometres from Mastihari and it is worth mentioning on its own. The old village of Kefalos on the top of the hill has managed to remain largely unchanged and for those of you who are interested in seeing the other side of Kos, I think you will be fascinated by what you see here.

A few years ago, I met a lady who until very recently still lived in the old way; she had no running water, telephone, electricity or indeed any of the things that we take for granted.

Her home was a haven of memories. Most of the wall space was taken up with photos and embroideries and everything was literally as it would have been before the advent of tourism. The hanging basket for the bread; the hanging crib for the baby; the plate racks; the open fireplace for cooking on; the storage space under the bed for keeping grain dry so that it didn't mould during the damp winter; the icons; the wheel for grinding flour; oil lamps and much more.

Kefalos still has many traditional old buildings, one of the reasons being that it didn't suffer the same amount of damage during the 1933 earthquake which pretty well devastated Kos town. If you walk around the village keep your eyes open for doors and lintels and old carpentry work much of which was very beautiful. You can see decorative metal shutters on doors and windows, a left-over from when people needed protection from pirates and invaders.

Another added bonus are the spectacular views looking across Kamari Bay and Kambos. In ancient times, this was the capital of the island and there are the remains of buildings buried everywhere.

Kefalos is a mix of ancient, old and new. From the beautiful Basilica overlooking the island of Kastri, to cafes and bars, to pebbly beaches with crystal water -something will captivate you.
